Reflecting on Gender Equity for Women’s History Month
Welcome from the JMCC Chair, Ms. Christine Marzouca.
On behalf of the Jamaican Museum and Cultural Center team, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge, honor and pay respect to women from every region of the United States and around the world, particularly during Women’s History Month and Jamaica’s Diamond Jubilee of Independence.
As a consequence of the indignancy of women worldwide, International Women's day (IWD) was birthed, and has been observed annually since 1910. The platform was launched twenty two years ago to rekindle awareness for the day, to honor the achievements of women and to persevere for gender equality (internationalwomensday.com).
The United Nations (UN) IWD theme for 2023 is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” As stated by the UN, "The observance will explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities, and it will also spotlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces..."
Establishing gender equity isn't limited solely to women fighting for the cause but rather forming allies with the opposite gender and with corporations. The aim is to construct tactile attributes of services, products and resources, which are incredibly vital for the purpose of innovation & technological change, and education in the digital age, ultimately achieving gender equity.
As we celebrate our Jamaican women on International Women’s Day, we invite you to do this with us— join our team; be part of the conversation. It is the appointed time to establish a legacy for Jamaica and descendants of Jamaicans in the diaspora. Help us women in leadership to preserve the Jamaican traditions and rich culture, and disseminate them to the wider community and around the world.
God bless our women.
Eternal Father, bless our land.
- Christine Marzouca, JMCC Vice President
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, the Jamaican Museum and Cultural Center (JMCC) would like to recognize all women for their nurturing role and their enormous contributions in the preservation of the human species. In spite of this great responsibility, many women have exceeded expectations.
Although we should celebrate women everyday, today, March 8, 2023, the JMCC salutes those that are familiar to us, as they have had an impact on our lives in important ways. Their incredible achievements serve to motivate those following behind. Historically, women like Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelo, Malala Yousafzai, and many more, have inspired us to empower ourselves fearlessly with confidence. Let us continue unwaveringly in the footsteps of these women, who sacrificed their safety, until we achieve genuine equality and are able to celebrate the power of being a woman, globally.
